Drag Race’s Aja is seeking legal action after her passport gender gets marked ‘male’
Aja came out as a transgender woman in 2021
RuPaul’s Drag Race legend Aja has revealed she is looking to consult lawyers after getting a new passport issued by the US government that she claims has her gender marked as ‘m’, for male. Aja came out as a transgender woman back in 2021, and her previous passport before this latest replacement was marked with an ‘f’ for female. Drag Race icon Aja has posted a lengthy statement about her passport gender and why she is threatening legal action regarding it.
The Drag Race star and rapper, who is currently proving herself to be a frontrunner on the currently airing All Stars 10, has said she never requested any change to her gender on the passport when she applied for her replacement to be issued. Here’s what Aja has said about the Drag Race star’s plans to seek legal guidance regarding her passport gender.
‘I’m being forced to choose between my safety and my career’
Writing in a lengthy statement on her Facebook page, Aja said “When I said that having a document with incorrect information puts me in danger traveling internationally, I was denied escalation, refused further documentation, and sent out the door with paperwork and a pat on the head.
“Now I’m being forced to choose between my safety and my career — between flying with a passport that outs me at every checkpoint, or canceling tens of thousands of dollars in international work I’m booked for.”

Aja further said in her view the US government had “violated [her] First Amendment [right] by erasing [her] identity” and “violated Fourteenth [Amendment] by denying [her] equal protection.
“This isn’t a clerical error. This is a federal fumble with my life in the crosshairs. And if they thought I’d carry this passport in silence? They forgot who the f**k I am. I’m not going down. I’m going public. I’m going legal. And I’m dragging the system with me!”
The statement from Aja comes after numerous high profile trans celebrities in the United States have called out the US government for their replacement passports deeming them male – including fellow Drag Race alum like Adore Delano and actress Hunter Schafer.
These issues have arisen for trans people after the Trump administration ruled “These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality” in an executive order in January which stated the only two genders are male and female and those are assigned at birth.
