Oxbridge, who? These Russell Group unis officially have the cleverest lecturers

A big appeal of going to one of the Russell Group unis is that the cleverest academics teach you. And bragging to your neighbours about getting into a Russell Group uni, of course. But some Russell Group unis have professors with way better reputations than the others.

The intelligence company Clarivate has published a list of the university lecturers who are most cited in research papers. The academics who make this list are supposed to be the top one out of 1,000 in their fields. Here is exactly how many of these lecturers at at each of the Russell Group unis.

Surprisingly, Oxbridge isn’t at the top of this list. University College London (UCL) has more top lecturers than the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. UCL also has the most academic staff out of all the Russell Group unis.

At the other end, the University of York, the University of Warwick and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) have the least top lecturers. This is super surprising, because LSE regularly comes high up on university league tables. Maybe this is because LSE is a slightly smaller uni anyway, and it has more of a focus on careers then research?

One of Warwick’s top lecturers also works at the University of Bristol, so maybe this uni should only count as having 1.5?

So, here are the Russell Group unis ranked by how many of the cleverest lecturers work there:
